My inspiration for the cake was given to me by my niece who showed me this On Avril's website:
So the two main colors were black and hot pink.
I sketched out the layout. I knew I wanted the skull and Savannah's name in the same writing as this:
I went to Michael's and picked up some gel food coloring because everywhere I searched on how to make true colors for frosting said to go with gel. Alas, I got steel gray at the very most and it tasted like metal.
So I ended up having to get black frosting from the store (which sucked because I wanted to have all my own home made frosting. )
I made a regular cake in my huge sheet pan, waited for it to cool completely (which wasn't a problem since I had to go to the store and get black frosting ANYWAY and the stores are about 15 - 20 minutes away from me!)
I started with putting on the most frosting first. I alternated black and pink on the edges and filled in the background of the skull.
I used my pastry bag with the "grass" tip (using the flat side) and made the checked part of it.
It took me about 3 hours to complete everything and all the kids LOVED it! YEY!
